There are several exceptional benefits of aluminum cases, including protecting sensitive equipment during transportation. Fragile contents need protection from vibration and shock, and aluminum cases are great for dampening impacts and oscillations.
A properly designed aluminum case or enclosure solves the problem of rough handling and shipping of fragile equipment at far less cost than designing more durable electronics and other fragile contents.
Other materials serve their purpose for case design. But, aluminum cases are lightweight, handle larger loads, and survive extreme temperatures. Also, when it comes to protecting fragile contents during shipping and handling, aluminum provides a rigid outer framework needed for isolation systems to function.
An engineered isolation system allows for long-term protection of case contents subjected to extreme handling and impacts from drops. These systems, like foam cushioning and shock mounts, work under the assumption the case body is perfectly rigid. Aluminum provides the rigid framework needed for this design.
Foam cushioning and shock mount isolation are designed to control the displacement of case contents, thus assuring minimal movement of items within the enclosure. But, without a rigid exterior framework, the systems can not protect electronics and other delicate items.
Other materials used for shipping enclosures absorb shock well. But, aluminum is best for cases needing maximum protection from extreme handling concerns with heavier loads.
Other materials, like plastic, are able to effectively absorb shock impact by deforming and reforming their structure. The problems for these cases are extreme temperatures. Cold and heat cause cracking and breaking. Whereas, aluminum cases perform extremely well in these conditions and will not crack or break.
A rigid aluminum outer framework also protects cases contents during vibration – as do other materials. But, aluminum cases make it easier to calculate the amount and design of absorption materials needed inside the case. Military standard, MIL-STD-810, provides a frequency range that adequately protects case contents during vibration from shipping and handling.
Lastly, aluminum designed cases are better for extreme loads (over 300 lbs.) being transported. Other materials are limited in how much they can contain. Whereas, aluminum is lightweight and able to handle heavy contents during shipping.
